Cadets go Solo

Two Cadets from the Squadron, Sgt Robin Shaw and Cdt Alfie Benjafield, have just gone solo on the Vigilant powered glider at Abingdon Airfield with 612 Volunteer Gliding Squadron. Sgt Shaw reports as follows: “On the 20th April we left for 612 VGS in Abingdon. On our arrival we were met by Pilot Officer Massie who took us to the VGS. We were briefed and went straight out to the air field. I was given Wing Commander Green as my instructor and Alfie was given Squadron Leader Howarth. Day 1 and 2 were just to get us doing the basics for the majority of it, although some of us moved onto landings. On day 3 I went solo which was an amazing feeling. Over the next 3 days everyone else went solo and we all passed the exam required. This meant that we all left on the 25th with Silver wings!Personally I found the Gliding Scholarship was a great opportunity which I would recommend to anyone who likes aviation. Next is to get Gold wings!”
