On the 11th of April, four cadets travelled for Cyprus for the RAF Akrotiri anuual camp. CWO Akshay Mandalia, FS Gideon Goldsmith and George and Peter Leonti represented the squadron in a group of 53 cadets from across the country. Throughout the week they visited various sections throughout the Sovereign base areas, which occupy a large portion of the island. Among these was 84 squadron, the Search & Rescue helicopter unit, as well as fire fighting, police dog and bomb disposal sections.
By far the highlight of the week was a visit to see the Red Arrows, the Royal Air Force’s aerobatic display team. The cadets spoke with officers and aircrew from the squadron and got to get up close and personal with the aircraft. Akshay called the experience “A once in a lifetime chance to meet some of the best pilots in the world”. As well as visits to military installations, the cadets got to enjoy the sun with visits to the private on-site beach and banana boating as well as a private cruise on the last day. Camps like this are the highlight of a cadets’ career and are truly once in a lifetime experiences!
