Camps with the RAF

The Sqn has been lucky enough to attended three annual camps over the summer, at RAF Leeming (home of Tornado Fighters) in Yorkshire, and two at RAF Odiham (home of the Chinook Helicopter) in Hampshire.

These weeks are an opportunity for cadets to experience a week of life on an RAF Station, and all cadets where able to fly in the Tutor trainer, fire the L98 rifle, and take place in leadership and training activities with the RAF, as well as make new friends from other Sqns in London Wing.

Many cadets at Odiham also had the opportunity to fly in the Chinook including flights into and out of Bramley Training Area for the night exercise.

Cadet Jermaine Hall described the week he attended as “absolutely brilliant, I will go again!”

Cdts Katrina Zienski and Nathan Wilkins achieved GICs Gliding awards on the Vigilant Gliders at 618VGS.

FS Preston, Cdts McCormack, Sinclair, & Lamasodis all gained their Region Marksman, and Cdt Hempstead and Razanousky gained their Wing Marksman on the Ranges.

In addition 4 cadets where selected to go to Rheinladen Base in Germany, HQ of the British Forces in that country. Cdt Johnny Dawson commented ”this camp was without a doubt the best I have been on with the added brilliance that it was really relaxed. We were only in uniform for two days and that set the mood for it being really relaxed. Go-karting was good even though you could organize it yourself with mates but was good to have some more competition as it went towards flight scores. People you meet there are great, as most people are only used to others from London Wing. Well done to Cdt Beveridge for getting best cadet as earning himself a ride in a Warrior armoured vehicle”

As mentioned above each camp has a competition for the Best Cadet out of 30 – 40 cadets from different units, judged by the staff on the camp – so no possibility of bias toward our cadets from out staff who would be 1 out of 10 staff. This year the Sqn has been on 5 camps so far and honoured with 5 best cadets, which is a record, which speaks volumes of the standards of our cadets as judged by other staff from the Wing!

The Winners:

RAF Wittering (March) – Cdt Claire Hayes
RAF Leeming (Jul) – Cdt Matt McCormack
RAF Odiham 1 (Aug) Cdt Gemaldis Lamasodis
