Cadets attended the Basic Lakes Course over the half term week. Run by the Sqn Staff, many of whom are qualified Mountain Leaders, this is a course designed to introduce cadets to the sport of mountaineering during (roughly) their first year on the Sqn.
Based at the Bunkhouse at Gillside Farm, Glenridding, on Lake Ullswater the course takes total novices and trains them in the ins and outs of navigation, equipment, mountain safety, first aid and emergency procedures on mountains up to 3000 feet high.
By the end of the week the cadets were able to complete a two day expedition on their own, carrying all equipment needed, including tents, food and cookers.
The expeds were helped by the excellent weather experienced during the week.
In addition a small group of more experienced cadets were being assessed for the Summer Mountaineering Profficiency Award involving safety on steep ground, micro navigation, and other mountain skills in preparation for their registration on the Mountain Leaders Couse.
