Lord Lieutenants Cadet

The Lord-Lieutenant of Greater London,  Sir David Brewer, presented Cadet Flight Sergeant Akshay Mandalia with a certificate and badge on the 14 March 2013 at an event held in Handel Street Territorial Army Centre in Central London.  He will serve as one of The Lord Lieutenants cadets for 2013. During the year the three cadets, one from each of the Cadet Forces, will join the Lord Lieutenant on his duties which include Royal events. Cadet Flight Sergeant Mandalia, a year 13 student at Ilford County High School, said: “It was an honour just to be nominated at the Lord Lieutenants Cadet and finding out I had been selected was amazing news.  It gives value to all the hard work and effort I have put in over the last five years. I have always wanted to be a pilot in the RAF and being a member of the Royal Air Force Air Cadets has brought me one step closer to making that dream real. I’ have expanded my knowledge beyond academic subjects and  have also learnt how to be more confident and to make decisions. At times I’ve been pushed to and beyond my mental and physical limits which has allowed me to realise my full potential.”

While presenting the awards, Sir David said: “Your citations were outstanding to listen to and your parents, I am sure, are very proud of you all. I look forward to us all working together and hope you will enjoy the events of the forthcoming year.” Cadet Flight Sergeant Mandalia was awarded the Young Volunteer Award at the first-ever Redbridge Community Awards in November last year, after giving up hours of his spare time organising squadron inductions and basic training of new recruits. He has also recently graduated from the Qualified Aerospace Instructors Course, which involved seven months of training at weekends and a ten-day test week. Officer Commanding 241 Sqn, Sqn Ldr Godden commented “Akshay was an easy choice for the nomination as a Lord Lieutenants Cadet. He is an outstanding individual who works hard for his Squadron and himself. He is very deserving of the position.”
