Phil is 40 not out!

On Saturday 29 March 2012 241 Squadron held a suprise Dinning In Night at Chigwell Golf Club to celebrate Warrant Officer Phil Wrights 40 years of service with the Squadron, with over 50 Guests present, ranging from Cadets of the 1970s and their Staff to the Staff and Cadets of today, with several serving members of the Armed Forces being present.

Phil Wright joined 241 (Wanstead & Woodford) Squadron Air Training Corps in 1972, and to date he has served on continuously on 241 for over 40 years, a record only surpassed by the late Warrant Officer Norman McGrath BEM. A quallified Drill Instructor, Range Conducting Officer and Mountain Leader (Trained) he is an asset second to none on the Sqn, and is still running the Sqn annual fitness test each year!

He joined a Squadron of average size, but one which already had a proud history, who’s first President was Sir Winston Churchill MP, and one which had made its mark in West Essex Wing. He has been part of the evolving history of the Squadron, participating in the move from Broadmead Road to Finchingfield Avenue HQs, Girls joining the Corps and the move to London Wing. In 2012 he is Squadron Warrant Officer of one the  largest Squadrons in the UK, and has been instrumental in the success of the Sqn, which has won the Lees Trophy for the best Squadron, Dacre Sword and Brooch for the Best Male and Female Cadets, and the Duke of Westminster’s Award for the Best Cadet from all 4 Cadet Forces.  Additionally, and dearer to his heart, the Squadron Drill Team has won the London Wing Drill competition seven times since 2001!

He is responsible for Recruit Training and, unusually for a Warrant Office, spends much of his time taking cadets flying at RAF Benson, as well as running the best stocked stores in the country!! He is a shinning example of service and self sacrifice that exemplifies the Air Training Corps, and has now become a Squadron institution, with his catch phrase of “It’s a shambles, Sir!”
