Staff climb to new heights

Fg Off Nick Harvey and Adult Warrant Officer Lee Morris of 241 (Wanstead and Woodford) Squadron have literally scaled new heights in becoming the Squadron’s first Single Pitch Award (SPA) Holders for Rock Climbing.

Already qualified Mountain Leaders both have converted a long interest in Rock Climbing into a national recognised professional qualification which will allow then to take cadets Rock Climbing throughout the UK. Similar in progress to a Mountain Leader qualification, both of them had to attend training course, gain experience of various climbs and then pass an assessment course by an Independent Assessor. This took them over 2 years of hard work and commitment on top of their normal Squadron duties.

This award will enable the Squadron to provide more challenging adventurous training opportunities for the cadets, and hopefully develop a new generation of young people with a love for the Mountains.

Nick stated:

“The assessment was daunting and more difficult than that for the ML. On the first day we were on the rock face from 9am to 8.30pm and then had a written exam to do on our return to the accommodation, although the second day was not so nerve wracking. We were both pleased to pass and look forward to taking cadets onto the rock faces of the UK!”
