On the Weekend of the 19 – 20 Oct the majority of the cadets had a weekend off; however this did not apply to many of the staff.
As part of the ongoing professional development available to the adult volunteers in the Air Cadets 4 staff attended an Obstacle Instructors Course at Lydd Training Camp in Kent, where they were given training by Regular Army Physical Training Instructors to enable them to take cadets over Obstacle Courses (or as the old fashioned call them “Assault Courses”).
This is a vital skill for staff as Obstacles Courses expose cadets to a challenging activity which develops fitness, confidence and team work in a challenging and physical environment.
Shown with other candidates and the PTIs are Ocdt Kris Pisano, WO Lees Morris, Sgt Michelle Cheah and CWO Mike Cross.
On the Sunday the OC, Sqn Ldr Godden, CI Steve Hawes and CI Terry Preston attended an “Introduction to the Award” Course for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme at Harlow Squadrons HQ.
The title was a bit of a misnomer as the Sqn has been one of the mainstays in terms of DofE over the last 20 years in West Essex and then London Wings, but the course now formally allows staff to assess the expedition phases of each of the three levels.
However two cadets were active as they attended a BASIC Course at 46F Kensington Squadron on the Sunday. Designed to give all cadets and staff over 18 an overview of their roles and responsibilities in a proactive youth organisation as the ATC, Sgt Rhys Reeves-Roberts and Cpl Alex Dutch are now far more knowledgeable than before and can make the transition to Instructor Cadets.
On the Monday evening the OC, Steve Hawes and CI Dave Grant also took part in an Ammunition Storemans Course after which another qualification was gained to enable the staff to deliver high quality training and activities for the cadets.
